Registration hampers Indian crane sales

The Indian mobile crane segment continues to grow, with indigenous pick and carry cranes dominating in volume terms. However, sales of conventional cranes have fallen back this year due to new registration requirements for truck-mounted and all terrain cranes.

Mobile crane sales in India grew 12 per cent last year to almost 5,500 units. Some 94 per cent of these were locally manufactured pick and carry cranes. Sales of conventional rough terrain, all terrain, truck-mounted, industrial and crawler cranes were down 29 per cent to 321 units

Significant growth is expected in the pick and carry crane sector this year, but conventional crane sales are expected to decline again due to a national registration requirement. Registration with a homologation certificate is now mandatory for truck-mounted and all terrain cranes in India. As the homologation process can be a lengthy one, and must be carried out for each individual model – be it new or used – the market has seen a slowdown in the face of these new requirements.

However, the Indian mobile crane market remains a robust one, and Off-Highway Research expects growth to continue for the next five years, albeit with an interruption for the 2019 general election.
